This article deals with a few parallels between the storyline of Fontane’s heroine, Effi Briest, and the famous Lucas Cranach’s painting, the Melancholy, which presents a symbolic female figurę dressed in red with an allegoric setting of pleasure and damnation. Both cases correspond with the rigorous protestant view of life suggesting close connection between sensual joy and the mortal sin of melancholy: the German Madame Bovary follows the same evolution as that indicated by Cranach’s allegory, she goes her tragic way from the redness of love-affair through the melancholie experience to the blackness of social damnation and, ultimately, death.
